POWER SUPPLY CHALLENGE ON LAUTAI FEEDER.

Assalamu Alaikum,
Warm greetings and best wishes to everyone.

The Electricity Monitoring and Supervision Committee of the Gumel Emirate Council/Gumel Emirate Foundation (GEC/GEF), under the leadership of Alh. Sani Ahmad Babandi (Dan Amar of Gumel), recently held a meeting with representatives of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO). The meeting was attended by the Jigawa State Regional Coordinator of KEDCO, Mr. Sunday Babatunde.

This engagement followed a formal notification to KEDCO by the Committee, conveying the position of residents connected to the Lautai Feeder (LAUTAI 11KVA FEEDER). The Committee clearly stated that consumers on this feeder would not be willing to pay the November electricity bill amounting to ₦10,700, due to the persistent lack of adequate power supply. Residents have largely experienced electricity only for a few hours at night, which does not justify the billed amount.

OUTCOME OF THE MEETING

Following deliberations, the meeting reached the following resolutions:

  1. Improvement in Power Supply:
KEDCO agreed to adjust the electricity distribution schedule on the Lautai Feeder to ensure power supply during both daytime and nighttime, with an increase in the total number of supply hours.
  2. Review of Electricity Bill:
The Committee resolved to wait until the following morning to receive KEDCO’s official position regarding the ₦10,700 November bill, particularly on the possibility of reducing the amount to a level that residents would find fair and acceptable.

COMMITTEE’S POSITION

The Committee maintains that if KEDCO reduces the billed amount from ₦10,700 to a reasonable figure that consumers can afford and agree to pay, residents of the Lautai Feeder will comply and settle the electricity charges. However, if no reduction is made, the Committee will advise residents not to pay the electricity bill for the month under review.

In addition, the Committee will escalate the matter by lodging a formal complaint with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to seek regulatory intervention and ensure fairness, accountability, and improved service delivery.

The Committee appreciates the patience and cooperation of the affected residents and assures the public that further updates will be communicated as discussions progress.

Thank you.
